If you are going to have work done to your home and you've never lived through a renovation, then you need to make yourself aware of the process. Talk to as many people
as you can to hear as many opinions as it takes. Start with relatives, neighbors, and friends. Seeing things on a TV show or in a magazine doesn't explain all the truth. Go by a job near you on a regular basis to familiarize yourself with day-to-day activities
and see if some of the workers have the time to explain their job. Ask a realtor you know how your project will affect the value of your property.
